Spotted this Alfa 166 in front of the Sotheby's building (York and 70th or something). Was never imported to the US by Alfa, sold here, etc. As Madman filled me in when I saw an Alfa 166 on eBay, a company called Autodelta brought several into US compliance for sale here. The two guys (father and son) were ultimately arrested for bringing in cars without permission; they said they were in the process of making them legal when the govt threw the book at them. Who knows.
In any case, this is the only Alfa 166 I have ever seen in person in the US. It had Pennsylvania plates, not diplomatic plates (as I often see on non-US-spec cars in Manhattan)

Wow, I had no idea Autodelta was shut down by the government. That explains why their website hasn't been active in a while. And here I thought this was a legit operation. It just goes to show how far some people here will go to own an Alfa.
Funny thing about the car you spotted; it doesn't have the tacky-looking bodykit or the Autodelta badges which all the cars imported by Scam Artist & Son did. This one appears to be an unaltered Euro-spec 166. I wonder how on Earth this car made it over unmolested and got a US title and registration?

Hmmmm
MADMAN and Justin:
We all know of ways to get cars into the country.. that shouldnt be here.. like that Alfa...
Auto Delta was one.. the guy who founded Subbie USA is another. There was a bunch in Cali who bring in the european and italian stuff. I jsut think its wild.. to see an Alfa in the US. For all we know.. there were existing US dealers who still had some pull.. maybe they brought it in...
Who knows.. As for Non-US spec cars in NYC.. Id be clickin my camera phone every day. Talk about a feast for the eyes..OY VEY!

Getting it over isn't impossible, just a gamble. They check what, 0.5% of the cargo containers coming into Newark, NJ? As for the registration, I am curious too. Perhaps the registration and license plates are for a 1996 Toyota Camry sitting in a barn somewhere.
I should add that if I was extremely wealthy, I'd hire people to federalize them, like the Motorex guys in CA do with the Nissan Skyline GT-Rs. You've got to have 2 of them crashed (at the minimum) among some other changes. Expensive, but not impossible.
